Kota grew up on the island of Alameda in the San Francisco Bay. After competing collegiately for UC San Diego and the University of Puget Sound, he began pursuing the marathon distance. He raced the Boston Marathon in 2009, finishing a few steps in front of Kevin Pierpoint (KP) and ending up on a massage table next to Reed Lyon. Four weeks later, KP convinced him to run with the Bay to Breakers Aggie centipede team. For the next few years, the Aggies inspired him to run 100+ mile weeks and hang out for beers afterwards. Now, he runs mostly to keep up with his wife Liza. And for the beers.
Kota works as a Physical Therapist at Stanford Hospital and is also pursuing a MBA at UC Berkeley.
Liza grew up in Half Moon Bay, California and began running in high school. Previously, she was an avid ballet dancer and had never participated in a team/school sport. After competing for UC Santa Barbara during her college years, she found her way onto the Aggies via the Bay to Breakers Centipede - the rest is history. She continues to run today because it provides a balance to her work and social life. Liza has a master's in Molecular Biology and conducts Clinical Research in the field of Neonatology at Stanford University.
Phil grew up in Oxnard, CA where he started running at the age of 5 for the local youth track club, the Oxnard Stars. Currently, Phil lives with his wife Krista and their dog Lucy in San Luis Obispo where they are both local teachers. When not running or working, he enjoys traveling with Krista; taking Lucy for walks; going to Justin Timberlake, Jay Z, Beyonce, or Red Hot Chili Peppers concerts; and relaxing. Phil says, “I have very much enjoyed connecting with coaches, teammates, and supporters over the years and look forward to more great running adventures.”
Sergio joined the Aggies in 2003 and has improved considerably over the years, becoming a frequent and consistent racer. He holds degrees in Engineering from Cedarville University (BSEE) and Cal State Northridge (MSEE). Sergio lives in Palmdale with his wife and son, working as a Flight Test Engineer.
Sergio says, "Running has been in the blood since I could remember. As a kid it took me to nearby mountain tops and scenic vistas and as an adult around the country and beyond. It's had its highs and its lows, but I wouldn't trade them as they helped shaped the rest of who I am. I hope to finish my remaining years at the most competitive level that I can be, but I will always enjoy the exhilarating thrill of exploring new trails and routes, especially when things are clicking."
