Masters Open with Cal 10 Win
Weather was cold and windy, so what is new for Cal 10. The fog lifted just before race time which means one thing. It will be windy on the way back. Birthday boy (40) Alferdo Vigueras goes out hard and is never to be seen again. A masters pack of Hose B, OMD, and Steinmaus settle in at 5:25 pace. Jose (2nd 54:26) gets tired of the pace after a mile and decides to pick it up. Steinmaus follows for about a mile then gets tired and fades to 6th. OMD (3rd 54:50) latches on to Jr Aggie Joel Martinez at 4 miles and stays there for the next 6 miles (age has its privilege). Meanwhile Stealth Rinde moves up through the pack to grab 8th (56:17). Nitrate down from altitude is 9th (56:26) with two stops in mile 7 and wins the 45 and up age group over Lloyd Stephenson. New Aggie Master (Well at least new to me) Antonio Arreola rounds out the Aggie scoring 5 in 25th (59:21).

SENILE EX-RUNNER FAILS TO RESTORE MILEAGE
Blames "Abject Stupidity" For Missing Weekend Long Run
Cupertino, 19th January 2003
Ex-runner Doug Steedman of San Francisco is looking for a little sympathy from his erstwhile running mates following his failure to show for a planned run in the hills today, although he says "I don't really deserve any sympathy, and if I know these guys I won't get it anyway".
Steedman (47) used to be a faithful participant in these weekly get-togethers, but his move a few years ago to San Francisco, and, more recently, the birth of his daughter, has tended to limit his participation. However, the presence of his mother-in-law from Japan to help with his daughter gave him some hope that he could get out of the house for a few hours for a run on his beloved trails. Says Steedman, "I'm sure the key to fitness and to losing the 12-15 pounds that I have gained over the past year is getting out for the Sunday long run".
Becoming inured to missing the weekly runs, Steedman normally just skims the emails announcing them: "I knew from Jeff Shaver's email that the long run this week was in Rancho San Antonio, and it was scheduled for 8:30 am". So at 7:40 following another night of sleep interrupted by his young daughter's cries, he set off for the 45 minute drive to the run.
"I did consider just running from home - then I could run for 90 mins
(hah!) and still be home around 9 am" Steedman remarked wistfully, "but the thought of running with these guys who I haven't seen for a few months motivated me to take the long drive".
Steedman arrived a couple of minutes at the usual rendezvous, to find noone else had yet arrived. But it was quite foggy so he wasn't as surprised as he should have been at this situation. When time approached when the "10 minute rule" should apply, and still no-one had arrived, he became alarmed, and drove into the park itself to see if he had misunderstood the rendezvous. He slowly drove by the crowded parking areas, peering through the fog to see if there was anyone he recognized. He did this twice, and then at 8:50, frustrated and miserable he headed for home and to buy bagels.
When he arrived home, he said to his wife "I haven't run a step - there was no-one there. I am super ticked off, but I don't know if it's with myself or with someone else". Then he checked his email, reading Shaver's message more thoroughly, and realized the sickening truth".
In his words "I had gone to the old Rancho run rendezvous, the church at Cristo Del Rey, while everyone was meeting a mile or so away over in Los Altos. I felt like a total stupid idiot".
With his mother-in-law departing for Japan tomorrow, the prospects for Steedman's return to fitness seem more distant than ever.

Masters Men 2nd Winter Nationals
Winter National masters champs Houston
OK. The Winter meet has never been a huge focus for the grey old aggies as we’ve primarily been hell bent on winning the Fall Classic, but we have sent a team for the last three years. In 2000 we won the race at Fort Vancouver and Tim Minor was the National Champ. Last year we sent a good team and lost a heatbreaker to the home team Oregon Trash Club.
This year we sent a skeleton crew of only five guys, a sort of Bad News Beers cross section of A B and C teams – little engines who could. Undaunted by our lack of star power, off went KO, agn Joe, Snake, Slick, and Nitrate across two time zones to Houston, where thunder and lightening lit up the course between big fat juicy raindrops.
In typical masters fashion, the planning was loose. KO knew it was in Houston, but not where. Slick lost his luggage. AGNJ’s trip took almost 24 hours because of bad weather in Phoenix. Emil, as always, was under control but wasn’t sure who he was sharing a room with so he got a corner suite and waited for gidot. Snake traveled with the ladies and by chance found the hotel and the room the men stayed in.
We warmed up on the course the day before the race and felt flats would work on the mostly grass twisty course. The hills were short but steep and there were only two ups and two downs per 2k loop. But when agnJ went back later after a small rain it was obvious that without big inch spikes you weren’t going up or down any of those hills, or around the the 180 degree turns which were way more treacherous than two hours earlier.
Race day was wet. Rain was coming down. The course was like a Whamo Slippin’ Slide. We lined up in box 11 next to newly turned 40 Jon Butler, a UCLA star in the early 80’s. AGN Joe got out, ran to the front pack alongside Butler. At the first hill, Butler did a face plant as his spikes were too short. Said Snake, “Like shampoo directions, Butler was doing the ‘fall, get up, repeat.’ He was still repeating when I went by.”
The course was a 6K, 3 laps. Up the river bank, run, down the river bank, run Up… you get the picture. KO and Emil were both fighting colds. KO noted “I could see Joe up there, but every time I made a big move to get with him, it felt like I went backwards.”
Slick ran a smooth, if dirty race. Sorta like the good old days at Boot Camp, slugging through the mud. Give him a pack and combat boots and he would have toasted us all.
In the end, the Boulder RR team was too strong for us to take a victory. Still, we ran tough for being underpowered and outgunned. Joe held on to take sixth. Slick, KO and Emil ran in a pack, and Snake kept them in sight. The only real downside for most of the men was that it was Valentines weekend and wives were patiently waiting at home, so not much of an Aggie celebration this year. We’ll be saving it up for next.

Maria Takes Overall Title at NorCal 10 Miler
Maria Trujillo-De Rios spanked the field at the NorCal John Franks Memorial 10 miler Saturday on a challenging course along the Sacramento River Trail, setting a new course record in the process. Maria was out fast and never looked back, taking the overall and masters title with a quick 59:34, defeating Cal-10 winner Kathryn Krieger.
On the mens side, Nitrate overcame bad blisters and a wife-induced cold virus to finish 3rd, while Weatherman Tom Cushman (after a 1:15 1/2 marathon last week)closed well in the final miles to take 4th. EBS/WVTC won a tight team battle with Hoys, with the Aggie's skeleton crew finishing a distant 3rd.

Masters Sweep Top Three at Big Sur 5K; Win Team Title
On a cold and windy day in Carmel, the Aggie Masters, led by Danny G, claimed the team title at the Big Sur 5K. The Ag's claimed the first 3 places with Danny G., Daddy, and Pilar Aspiro leading the way. Nitrate finished a solid 5th, nailing Lloyd Stevenson in the last 200 to take the 45+ division. Jim Hartig rounded out the top five in his second race of the season. Daddy was the victim of local Carmel gang members who made off with his treasured sweatpants, won in a raffle at the 1982 Wharf-to-Wharf race. "Motherf***er's done boosted my sh**!!!" Daddy vowed to exact a measure of retribution, and set off towards the Carmel Mission with several cans of Krylon spray paint to "show them punks they can't mess with Daddy......"
1. Danny G. 15:20 (6th overall)
2. Daddy 16:04 (protested that his time was worth 14:04)
3. Pilar 16:34
5. Nitrate 16:48 (1st 45+)
?. Hartig 18:40

Tahoe Relays: 2 Aggie teams, 2 Aggie wins, 1 course record.
Men's Masters (Aggie Mommas Boys) won for the 5th straight year, finishing second overall in 7:24:03. Jeff Townsend slept in his truck on Echo Summit to get some altitude training in, then led off with a fine 57:58 for 9.6 miles. He handed off to Matt Yeo in 2nd, and that was where the team stayed the rest of the day. Matt dusted off his old Mountain Goat costume and proceded to destroy the field. He ran the fastest 2nd leg of the day (that's of ANYBODY, not just Masters), handing off at the top of Spooner Summit in 51:42. Kevin Searls took it from there, utilizing his post-Catalina/pre-fatherhood fitness for a 62:10 10.3 mile leg. Tim Minor cruised the longest leg (12.6) in 1:10:25, just 1 minute+ over his masters course record. Tom (almost 50) Cushman rigidly trotted a 66:05 for the 10.6 mile 5th leg, then tagged Groom-to-be Steve Boaz. Snake ran 72:14 up the
D.L. Bliss Park hill (10.6 miles, 800 ft rise last 1.8 miles) then promptly blew chunks all over Brent Griffiths. Brent had no choice but to run hard to the finish so he could rinse off Snake's lunch. Brent clocked 63:12 for the 10.6 mile 7th leg, only 7 seconds off the fastest time for the day.
Mixed Masters (Aggie Cats & Dogs) got the win AND course record in their first attempt at this division. The strategy was to run the 3 women on the 1st 3 legs and build a big lead so the old men could coast home. Liz Nast led off with a 69:29 and handed off in 2nd (mixed masters). Julie Rohloff then took on the Spooner Summit hill (while Dirk tried to feed Erica!) and maintained the 2nd place position with a 69:08. Shannon Sweeney claimed to have not run longer than 7 miles in 10 years, but since leg 3 is lotsa
downhill, we convinced her she could do it. She's still cussing about it, but she managed 81:35 and handed off in 2nd place! Rob Nast then rolled up his sleeves and went to work, passing 11 runners (in other divisions) and running a solid 80:53 to take the Mixed Masters lead by 9minutes. Steve Strangio came out of semi-retirement to run through Tahoe City and along the west shore in 74:26. Next came Tahoe Relays Historian Ron Richardson to run the 6th leg. Pretty uneventful except for the MAJOR meltdown on the 1.8 mile hill, Run finished in 77:40 but still comfortably in the Mixed Masters
lead. That left it up to Dirk Rohloff to finish the job. Dirk left no doubt as he passed one more team for a 13th overall finish. The winning time of 8:49:41 is a new Mixed Masters course record.
Post-race festivities included chair sitting, rehydration, and heckling at the finish, followed by the traditional Mexican dinner at Cantina.
Next year, Women's Masters? Mark it down, 2nd Saturday in June. Be there.

Dennis and Jeff - Long Long Distance
Rinde Returns to Manitoba Marathon - Dennis Rinde was invited to Canada as one of the honored guests at the 25th Annual Manitoba Marathon. He won the event in 1981, 1982, 1985, 1987, 1988 and 1998. His course record of 2:13:53, set in 1981, still stands. In 2003, he finished 2nd overall and 1st masters in 2:39:23.
Rinde 2nd at National 50k Trail Championship - Dennis Rinde was the sole representative of the Aggies at the USATF National 50k Trail Championship. He planned to start conservatively and work his way up on through the pack the notoriously difficult Golden Gate Headlands course (start with a 1/2-mile on the beach, climb a total of over 7000 ft, negotiate lots of switchbacks and stairs and even a ladder). At the halfway point, he had moved up to 6th place; into 4th at the 25-mile point. He sacrificed a pound of flesh and a pint of blood on the last downhill but finished 2nd in a time of 3:54:45. Due to the absence of any other Aggies, Hoy's took the team title, recycling the usual suspects (Craig Steinmaus, Chris Phipps, et al) into ultra runners.
Aggies at the Ride & Tie Championships - Sporting Aggie jerseys at the 2003 Ride & Tie Championships were Dennis Rinde and Jeff Townsend. Dennis teamed with Jim Howard and Jim's horse, Magic Sirocco win the 32-mile race in 3:34 with a 40-minute lead over the 2nd place team. Jeff required veterinary attention to get through the race but still managed to pull off an 8th place finish, teamed with a 69-year-old partner. While coming to the assistance of another rider (damsel in distress ???), Jeff got whacked in the head by the misbehaving horse and required 14 stitches. And you guys thought he was tough for sleeping in his car and leading off at the Tahoe Relays !!!
Jeff Townsend was also slected to represent the USA in Pan American Games for Endurance Horse Racing. He is presently up in WA doing the deed for America!

Linda Leads Women to First NC, Men Take One Too
Masters women: We had a nearly unbeatable team and they did not
disappoint with Linda and Maria going 1-2 and Julie finishing in the top 10 as well. The master's women win this one going away. Linda in particular ran very strong winning with a 2+ minute margin and a nice $1500 presentation check that was bigger than her.
Masters men: Well let's just get this part out of the way and say Eddy smoked. 29:06, won's by nearly 2 minutes. Enough of him. Onto our guys. 5 in the top 14, we win this one too. Danny won the battle of the Danny's with a outragous burst of speed that was more not slowing down vs actually running faster. Still, it was too much for Martinez.
Huff coming off his "3-4 miles a day with Carol" training routine, runs 5:10 pace in front of the hometown crowd. Jose ran his usual tough self, while Brent had a tremendous last 2 miles. At 4.5 he was side by side with Sockman. 1.5 later he had 30 seconds on him and had Jose in his sights. Ran out of room, but good to see ol Griff back in the house.
Heck even his dad showed up to witness the rebirth. Dennis rounded out the scoring 5 with a 33:21 effort. Special thanks to all the other master's men who made the trek and ran tough. Mando should have been in the results below, but I couldn't locate him in the final tally. Oh yeah, Bud out kicked a 6 year old who pissed him off in the Banana Man 5k. He felt that was worthy of a couple of suds.

We had the cooler set up at the awards. The Aggie crew along with Danny Martinez and Eddy H were there, although Eddy was on a brew fast for the coming week in anticipation for the marathon this weekend. It just must be no beers the week of the race as he had a number with us at pizza the night before. Martinez and Mando got Jose's share of Tecates, plus a few others for good measure. Linda gave her share of to her husband Scott who was sipping them down between bites of hot dogs.
Guess the only way he'd come to the race was the promise of free beer and dogs. Aeron and Bud had a few as well to celebrate her 10k PR. I'm thinking that a 30 pack for $18 was a heck of an investment. Pete had Sunshine to deal with. Some Team Eugene gal he tried to help by saying she was in 5th for the masters. Well she wasn't, she was 6th and that meant no money which meant she complained constantly about Pete screwing up her race. Aeron had a smile on her face when she commented to Pete that it seems like he would have a great time in the 3 hour ride seated next to her on the way back to San Jose airport. Pure joy from what I could tell.
Went from there to the Pozo saloon to catch Los Lobos with the Searls' along with old roommate Jerry Hernandez, his wife and their daughter.
The highlight of that was sneaking into the band's private post concert dinner and taking a picture of Jerry and his daughter Lauren along with Cesar Rosas (lead singer - dude who always wears the shades). Jerry's a huge Los Lobos fan so he was all happy after that. The low light was getting back to the truck and finding out someone stole our post concert stash out of the cooler in the back of my truck. Hurls got a kick out of that.
Good day all around. Look forward to the next 4 editions and hope to see you there.

Mislick at Marine Corp
Teh Report from the Man.
Oh, all that training, and 50% of your success comes down to the weather on that day -- just doesn't seem fair. It was 62 degrees at the start, got into the 70's by race end, and was 90% humidity throughout. I was pretty fit and was pretty sure I could break 2:40 (off a 1:14 half marathon), and hit the 10k in 37:25, 10 miles in 60:25, halfway in 1:19.20. Started feeling the heat at around 15 but still hit 20 miles in around 2:03, but really bit it at 22 -- my last 10k was in 46:00, most of that in the last 4 miles -- ended up with a 2:49.15 -- at 23, all I wanted to do was stop -- it was brutal!
The good news was that I was 2nd on the Marine Corps team (I died, they died worse), 5th AG, 34th of 18,000. Winner ran 2:25 and he is an OT qualifier already.

Joesph and Fabris Team Up for Muddy Buddy Masters Win
Last year the dirty duo won the whole Muddy Buddy because there was no Masters division. Since the organizers added the age group, the boys jumped in that wave and were victorious and had the 6th fastest time of the day.
Lori Fabris and teammate Jeanne Nieman also won the masters ladies and were 3rd overall on the feminine side. The dirty girls found this surprisingly clean.

Men Finish 2nd to Strong LA Team
The front running trio from Team Runners High, including last year's individual champion Dave Olds, proved superior to the tight pack of Aggie veterans in this year's 10K cross country championships.
On a course that was a poor man's version of Stanford without the flat sections in windy and cold conditions, Greater Lowell's Bob Winn employed his usual tactic of bolting at the gun, establishing a lead, then hanging on for dear life. It worked, as he was able to hold off the 2-3 finish of Team Runners High all-star duo of Peter Magill and Olds.
Minor, Emil, KO, and Terrance had all gotten "the crud" the week after PA's, but stepped up when it counted. Brent, Tim, and KO ran in a tight group with OMD, Emil, and Matt forming their own peleton a few seconds back. T. Cush gave it a shot, but was forced to retire with a bad hammy/back. As the race unfolded, Tim, Brent, and KO battled to stay close to the lead pack. OMD, Emil, and Matt all passed the Runners High 5th man in the last kilo, but their heavy hitters upfront accounted for a time surplus that negated the Aggie's 1-5 time gap of 48 seconds. The boy's gave it their best effort of the year but were unable to defend the title and ended the string of 4 straight national championships. It also marked the first year that the Ag's failed to place an individual in the top 10 since 1996.
Note: The average age of the squad was 45.4 years, the oldest of the 10 teams in the 40-49 age group.
