Roads
Grand Prix

With the addition of Dennis Rinde and Greg Mislick to the Club we were able to compete all the way through the long stuff in the end and we ended up 2nd in the team championships, our best finish yet. Dennis and Greg both made it to the top ten in the individual standings and in doing so get complementary entry into all next year’s Grand Prix events.

Helping out along the way was our intrepid leader of the Roads, David Ahn. He not only did all the logistics for getting out teams organized and scores submitted, he even sacrificed his body on several occasions to make sure we had that third or fifth guy, whatever it took, to get the points.

As a team we won 4 of 12 the PA races, including Compaq, Paso Robles, the Cap Mile, and Zippy. That should bring in over $1000 to the club in PA prize money courtesy of the old dogs.

Individually we had winners with Minor at Comaq, Huff at Paso, Haase at Cap Mile, and Rinde at Cal 10, Clarksberg and Humboldt.

Other Great Performances on the Roads included Mando’s Masters win at Mercury News. Then on our annual trip south to Catalina Island Minor won the 10K outright and Fabris won the 5K outright. At Wharf-to-Wharf, Minor was top Master. At Devil Mountain, Yeo took it.

Long Stuff

Looking at the roads based on Long vs. Short, were it not for Dennis and Greg, Ahn and Hashim, Ed Klotz and Steve Palladino, Lawson and Boaz, we might not have scored much. These guys were the long warriors. Dennis scored victories at Cal 10, Humboldt, and Clarksberg. Mislick lead the team at Houlihans.

Short Stuff

Speedsters like Haase and Fabris helped us at the 5K and below races, with Haase winning the mile and Fabris getting 2nd in both 5Ks. Rios was a nice addition to the mid season, as first man at 8K and second man in the Zippy 5K and Paso 10K. Consistently Steedman and Davis were there complimenting and rounding out the top five.

Mando and Huff Make World Masters Road Rankings for 2000
Based on performances on USATF Certified Road Courses, the Aggies had two members make the http://www.runningusa.org/media/rank_mast_wld.shtml for 2000.

Ivan Huff was ranked 15th in the US, ahead of such studs as Steve Scott, based on his Millennium Half Marathon and Zippy 5K runs.

Armando Siqueiros was ranked 21st in the US based on his Cal 10, Big Sur 5K and Mercury News 10K

The rankings normalize all performances to “equivalent 10K” times, and the Ivan’s best times equated to 31:16 while Mando was close behind at 31:35.

Mando turns the tables on Minor in a tight one.

In a nice bit of asphalt drama, Mando opened up a gap on Minor through 5k that he built to a pretty good size. But somewhere around 5.5 miles he started coming back. At six miles Minor was moving in a high closure rate. But Mando never looked back and they finished fifth and sixth overall! SLO Boy Lopez gets fourth in Masters. New Master Mislick runs a 34 minute one. Our other good doctor, SteveP, holds off Daddy Ri in a tight 35 min battle.

Minor Takes The Title

(Vancouver, WA) Putting four in the top ten, five in the top 15 and seven in the top 21, the Aggie Masters added the USATF Winter Cross Country title to their national championship list.

Minor lead the race from the gun. He separated himself from Mando and a Club Northwest runner on the second 2K loop of the 5 loop course. The layout featured a 400 gradual downhill into a series of turns and small hills, with the loop concluding up a 200 meter rise to the start/finish.

Mando pushed on the third loop to also drop the CNW runner. There was a cold wind coming into the face of the runners as they covered the first half of each loop. Temperatures where in the low 40's and overcast.

An Aggie pack of Odion, Magalanes, Fabris, Lawson and Cushman ran together for the first loop, coming through the first lap in about 7:03. By the third loop they started to string and the order went to Magalanes, Fabris, Cushman, Lawson and Odion and stayed that way through the finish.

In the post race hotel room with the Bathtub Full o' Beverages, the Hotel Dick came to inform us of the Party Policy, which included no alcohol for Minors. Of course Tim was instantly busted for being a "Minor in Possesion". Hank was also busted for sleeping with a Minor, as the two had to share a bed the night before. We hope to have Hank free by Track Nationals.

At the local bar, Husongs and Larrys, the party kicked into overdrive. The wait staff started kicking in with the brothers, guitars came out, and it became a concert. They roasted Tim as the Champion and Jamey sprayed the table with high quality Hamms beer.

Steve Boaz, seen here in XC.
(Las Vegas) - Aggie Master Steve Boaz lowered the club masters record in the marathon to 2:41:03 last weekend. The SLO Slug took down the mark of fellow Slug Adolpho Lopez who recently ran 2:42:16 at CIM. But then Cushman wrote to tell the Rag that he ran a 2:38:34 back when he was 41. So he gets the record.

Boaz placed 18th overall in the field of just under 2000 males. He was fourth in the Masters Division. Nice running for a Slug.

Hank beat the next runner by a margin of over sixty seconds. Feeling bad that he wasn't with the brothers at Big Sur, he took it all in stride. "They didn't need me and I didn't want to be sprinting against Joe and Mislick that early in the morning."

RunRon at Tahoe
Ron runs for the Coasters
The Hoods rolled to a big win in the Masters category, breaking the old masters course record in the process, and nearly stealing the entire race.

Aggie Tahoe History by Ron Richardson

The Hoods lead the race by as much as seven minutes at one point, and still finished a mere two minutes behind the eventual winners, an all-star team of young bucks from the San Joaquin Valley (we had at least 100 years on those guys). The Hoods time of 7:13:40 was a new masters course record, breaking the record set by another group of Aggie old farts several years ago. Here are the distances and splits for each brother:

Leg 1 - 9.6          Steve Haase         57:40          57:40
Leg 2 - 8.2          Matt Yeo             50:45          1:48:45
Leg 3 - 10.3         Jeff Townsend       59:11          2:47:36
Leg 4 - 12.3         Tim Minor            69:04          3:56:40
Leg 5 - 10.6         Kevin Searls          67:27          5:04:07
Leg 6 - 10.5         Terence Boynton    65:04          6:09:11
Leg 7 - 10.5         Steve Boaz          64:39          7:13:40

The Coasters pulled in 7th place overall and fourth masters, depsite giving up Searls to the Hoods to replace Mando. Between them and the Hoods were an all star team from Oregon and the Golden Valley Harriers. Bad Junior and DOH stepped in to fill the gaps (Ruggle had to pull out with a back injury).

Strangio - 64:25
Steedman - 57:50
Lenting - 69:40
Richardson - 80:47 -
O'Halloran - 71:14
Cushman - 68:30
Johnson - 72:43
8:05:15

Post race festivities began at the finish line as we viewed the rest of the
teams finishing and tossed insults at the winners. "We woulda won the race
but we'd be embarassed to be associated with such a slow winning time." Later, Larry Guinee's evil twin came with his girl friend in their 60's micro bus (bought from Bud) to invite us for free beer and food. Turns out
they were humping some new brew which was marginal. Next stop was Tres Hombres Cantina for post race refreshments. Scarfed some food, sloshed some liquid and watched in awe as Leo "The Director" Lenting had the locals hanging on his every word.

I included the youngsters on this email because there are a number of high
school/early college teams at the race thinkin' they're hot stuff. Let's
show them what the younger Ags can do. Also be cool to get a women's and open team up there. Ron is beginning an early campaign to run in a new category for next year, mixed over 40 - no joke.

Particular thanks to Toni Ruggle who hung even though his back was wasted, Noreen Searls, the Haase family and Christina.

The large Aggie cheering section made an impact on the milers. "I tell you what," said Joe, "Coming by section Q, where the Aggies were sitting, was a kick in the pants!"

Local PA runner Leonard Sperandeo won the race in 4:21. Fabris moved from fifth to third on the last lap, knocking Kevin back one spot. Minor and Mando held their sixth and seventh places for the second half of the race.

The race moved Fabris up the all-time Masters Records mile time, with Kevin improving on his time from last year and Minor and Mando entering the top five. Mando was competing with an injured calf that kept him from his form earlier in the month when he set the club record for 1500m.

Steve Haase once again showed his speed by outkicking a wave of Aggies and local rival Leonard Sperandeo to win the Cap Mile by half a second in 4:28.

Tim Minor showed Fabris and Ostenberg his back, trading places with them from last week while he snuck in with a great finish for third. Fabris and KO were 4th and 5th.

Doug Steedman had a hot one with a road PR of 4:45. Brand New Aggie Dennis Rinde ran 4:43.

Daddy Rios, not content with his 4:37, came back unoffically in the open middle heat and ran 4:41. Nice Double Daddy.

Hank Lawson and Mike Davis pushed at the front of the first masters heat, with Hank holding on for the win by the bucksin of his teeth.

On the team side, it looks as if we were able, with our ten solid masters including Dave Lucas, to put together two teams ahead of the third place team, WVJS, and fourth place Hoys. Note: WVTC and EBS have merged their masters programs and won't score for a few more weeks.

First Rios held the record. Then KO lowered it early July. On the 11th the two met to settle the record....for now.

The two went through the mile together in 4:56. KO took the point and pressed. Into the last lap they were side by side, with Daddy thinking he was gonna take that boy. But KO pulled a 64 out of the bag, 32/32, to Daddy's 32/35 for the 3 second victory.

KO 9:38
Daddy 9:41

Mike Davis doubled the 800/400 in 2:13 and 57.1, each mark an improvement on his club marks.

Doug Steedman did a near spot on rendition of his previous week's 800 in 2:11, while Hank chugged to a 2:16.

Juniors up front. Masters in the middle. Brett Gotcher scored a hat trick with his top junior, top local, and top Aggie performance at the 29th Wharf to Wharf Six Mile. And Brett was the doctor of dip with his 29:58 time.

First Master was Master Minor in 19th with his version of the anti-dip in 31:03. Fabris, 31:56, had a great day as the "hometown" master finishing on the same minute as Minor for the first time in a road race since they were in College together.

Dr. Palladino put out suberb effort and was named the "Master of the Meet" with his terrific improvement and 32:50 time.

Other Masters in the top 100 and getting exclusive W2W sweatshirts were Jeff Townsend, Greg Mislick, and Scott Steinmaus.

Just outside the Money, but Close Enough to talk their way into sweatshirts were the Snake in 101 and Doug Steedman in 103. But the Snake said, "Nah, I'd rather keep the finishing card with 101 on it for inspiration." Completing the field was the returning Joe Green.

Chasing the Mercury - Steedman's All Comer Odyssey
Doug Steedman, the master of the Master PR, has been hot in the 800 & Mile this month. But getting his name listed in the results posted by the Mercury News has been illusive. Check this Homerian Tale:

week 1: ran 800, would have won mile
week 2: ran mile, probably would have won 800
week 3: won 800, results didn't make the paper
week 4: couldn't go, would have won 800
week 5: won 800, results didn't make the paper - 2:10.6
Week 6: Lowered PR to 2:10.3, waiting for the paper...

At least his moved his PR down and his standings in the All Time List Up. Check the Records

At this last All Comer Meet, Hank also did a nice bit of 800 running with a 2:12. He started the mile for a double, but stepped off at 100 meters and said "Why wreck a great 800 with a slow mile?"

"The crowd really made a difference," said recent National Champ Kevin Ostenberg. About a hundred well wishers came to check out the action under the lights at the Los Gatos All Comer Meet. They fanned out around the track shouting encouragement the entire race.

"What's cool is that other teams knew we were going for the record and were willing to let us have center stage," commented Joe Fabris. Hoy's and other Aggies joined in on the effort to give the crew competition.

"People at work think I'm crazy to drive down from Reno to run a mile, but what's cooler to say than 'I set a world record last night' around the water cooler come Friday?" added Minor.

"We were shooting to run 4:32 pace and hope to turn up the volume at the close of each leg," noted anchor Haase. "Kevin really gave me the baton in a nice position."

There are 24 different stories to be told (Click to Read Tyrone "Waterbug" Minor's Story in BARN), but the highlights are that the Aggies got 1st and 4th in the race. The Black team broke the course record and in the process became the first masters team to dip under 18 hours. Overall, the Black team was 7th and the Blue team 27th. Outstanding legs by all. The Blue team had some misfortune with missed handoffs that set them back by about 20 minutes. We split our bet with Hoy's, with the Blacks besting their Submasters team and Blues dropping to their Mixed team.

There were also a couple close battles between Black and Blue runners. There was a bet that any Blue team runner with a faster overall split than their Black team counterpart would get his beer bill covered by the latter. Searls held off Richardson by 25 seconds and Yeo held off Haase by 24 seconds.

Going straight to the front and opening a 10 second lead in the first mile, Terence was only hounded by the cheers of the crowd for second placer Carmelo Rios. T-Bone ran the exact same time at last year to get this year's victory.

But Daddy knows everybody, so the fans wouldn't stop with the "Go get'em Carmelo"'s. Which is cool, but somewhat of a hindrance when you are stalking a dude. "I always knew where you were," said Terence to Rios after the race.

For the first run up the hill, defending champ Chris Willis was on T's shoulder, pressing the pace. But in his first race in about a year, the peace officer from Albany had to back off. He eventually ran with Fabris and the two came down the final hill in 6th and 8th, with Fab long-legging the downhill for the advantage. "Nothing like getting the snot kicked out of you to motivate your training," noted Chris.

Steedman dutifully took up the fifth man's chore of trying to stay in it and keep the first four honest. He blasted down the homestretch to take down a GV Harrier for a precious point. And we needed it. The score was tight between EBS/WVTC and us, 37 to 41 for a four pointer.

Large pack of 8 Aggies plus River City Rebel Frank Thomas followed Purple Haze through a quick first 1/2 mile. After Hashim slammed on the breaks, Minor took the lead as the field started to thin out. When spectator Harris yelled at Minor that he was freaking jogging, Gray Matter took off and left all behind for a 22 second victory. KO led Carmelo and Shaver through 3 miles when the racing began. Daddy kicked fastest, with Shaver kicking to third and KO finishing a very tired fourth. Ancients Yee and Cushman

Rinde Wins Humboldt Half!
BIG Congratulations go to Dennis Rinde for winning the masters at the Humboldt Half yesterday.

Thanks to Greg Mislick for a good solid effort.

Special thanks to Steve Palladino for running the half 2 weeks after the Chicago marathon. Steve's gastrocnemius (or calf, as some of us know it) flared up and this may jeopardize his plan on running CIM.

Also Big thanks go to Ed Klotz for making the long drive over to be our fifth man.

The Johnny Cash of Cool, the old man in black, Kevin Ostenberg, won the Shoreline Open with new course record and managed to best Grand Prix leader Ty Strange in the process.

New! - Shoreline Photos

Daddy Rios, who was "vacationing" in Hawaii, contracted with Jeff "Hit Man" Shaver to do a Nancy Carrigan on Rigid Man Cushman and take him out at the knee caps. Shaver did as ordered, taking down Cushman. Suffering collateral damage was Kevin Searls. Shaver made the bold assualt in the first 100 meters. "I was running behind Rigid CushMan when I sees this guy Shaver hit the dirt," said Joe Fabris. "I calls out 'Man Down' and the next thing I know Cushman is rolled up in a ball crying "Why me? Why me?'" Searls followed Cushman to the ground. They all got up - no Mary Decker-itis on these boys, and finished a bloody mess.

Jeff Shaver went on to get fourth, Cushman eighth, and Searls hung in there for twenty-fifth. It was the second race in a row where Searls shed blood.

Margaret - Course Record at Shoreline
A full Aggie women's Masters team debuted at the Sierra Invite. Joan Haase, Margaret Lang and Barb Richardson showed up and gave it a go on this true XC course. Margaret was second master and 9th overall in 19:23, Barb was 6th master and 19th overall in 20:10 and Joan started her Aggie racing career (first race??) on a tough course at 23:52. Unfortunately, the open women needed some help so Margaret and Barb ended up scoring for the open team. Either way we scored our runners, open versus masters, the Impalas won the race so we kept the open team's chances alive.

At Shoreline, we didn't have a Masters team but Margaret showed up and took top honors for the Masters Women running 18:15 for 8th overall. If the PA site is correct, this is a new Masters course record by over a minute (previous record is listed as 19:46).

Margaret Lang and Tim Minor were both crowned Masters' Victors at the PA Final race today at Golden Gate Park. In addition, the masters men swept 1-6 and 9 of the top 11 spots on the challenging 6.05 mile version of the GGP course.

New! Photos From BARN at PA

Going straight to the front and opening a large lead was Minor. That left a pack of Boynton, Rios, Aispuro and Shaver to duke it out for second. That pack held until the final loop, when Shaver fell back, leaving three. Rios made a move with half mile to go, up into the eucalyptus grove, that sealed second, with Terence, then Jose, following.

More Coverage In BARN

Farther back in the pack Cushman, Yeo, and Tom Trimble of EBS ran together with a small gap over the remainder of the top 20 regulars Haase and Fabris of the Aggies, then Ross, Maia and McGuire of EBS, and Gouwens of Hoy's.

Cushman managed another top ten finish, making that 8 straight top tens since turning pro, a PA record.

Emil had to deal with his spasming back, Ron his lack of racing. Steedman was good thru 3, held it together, and had his usual great finish. And Kevin his BROKEN RIBS from his fall at Shoreline to keep him under control.

Galligan and Ruggle ran for clydsedale pride and David once again proved he was the utility man, always there and ready for action.

The Bay Bombers reversed their lose of last season and crushed the Sac Capitols 20 to 35.

Margaret was very strong in her win and Barb's fourth place finish was so fast it made everybody take notice. Hillary Fong was lead the wrong way on the course.

Master Win Number 4 at Mobeeel
All the work over the fall came down to the command “Runners Set" and that darn gun. I was shooting for an Aggie top-five and an overall top-ten.

But last week I was out with a cold, and boy howdy if I can’t do crap following illness. Within the first two hundred meters I knew I was out. Heavy duty oxygen debt. And I thought I’d paid that debt to society. I slowed to try and get something back but it didn't click until I was at six minute pace. Oh well. Kevin Searls with his broken rib and I hooked up and ran together.

More in BARN

The course was basically a big grass field 300 meters on end. They threw a little dog-leg 180 on each lap and got 2 kilometers. There were hay bales through the dog leg to add a bit more spice. At the end of each lap, the tail-enders did get to see the race ahead of us, so Kevin and I looked forward to that.

And we saw an Aggie victory. Minor and KO at the front in third and fourth. Rios and Jeff Shaver were in about seventh and eighth. With an injured OMD just outside the top ten. Emil and Tom Cushman were in the twenties, battling for over 45 honors.

But expectations were high. Minor and KO both wanted that win. Tim closed to second and Kevin held forth in fourth. Daddy spent most of the day before telling us how he was going to wear his jewels and rubies on that crown, but the jester was where the jester was. Terence has had better days this season and didn’t want to be out of the top ten. The course may have been flat, but that grass-sand mix took it out of you. Everyone was wobbly legg’d and tired at the end. So we made ourselves happy with the win and look forward to Vancouver in February.

Margaret was in the hunt, in the front through two laps when her knee gave out and she had to come into the pits. She had to park it in the garage. Just one of them racin' deals.

CIM: Call it Rinde-Town.
Dennis Rinde cements the PA Grand Prix with a PA win at CIM.

Race Report from Greg Mislick:
++++++++++++
When the gun went off, it was absolutely pouring, sheets of rain, and it kept up throughout the first 20 miles with brutal winds. Ran 7:10's the first few miles in a daze, wondering why the hell I was out there in this downpour when I could have been partying my ass off in New Orleans!!! After the shock wore off, I threw in a few 6:20's to catch Don Paul, and we then settled into 6:40's until about 15 when he dropped off for the porta-john. I wore a freakin' poncho for 15 miles until it started turning into a sail, then had to ditch it! Ran the rest solo -- no muss, no fuss, nothing heroic -- as Al Davis would say, "Just finish, baby!" But if people try to tell you other-wise, it wasn't fun...

True story: I've only attempted to run CIM one other time, and it was in 1987. Ron remembers the weather that day too -- is it ever nice there?!!
+++++++++
Boy oh boy, thanks to Hashim Bashiruddin for taking a bullet for the team and running a race he really didn't have a plan to run. Estimates are that we were fifth.

But what about that Barb? Setting up the club record in the marathon!
